Gardening in its most basic term is simply growing plants. Ornamental plants are typically grown for their flowers, foliage, and overall appearance, Some garden plants are grown for consumption (vegetables, fruits, herbs, and leaf vegetables) or for medicinal use.
Gardening ranges in scale from orchards, to street plantings with one or more different types of shrubs, trees and herbaceous plants, to residential yards including lawns and foundation plantings, to large or small containers grown plants. Gardening may be very plant specific, with only one type of plant grown, or involve a large number of different varieties.
The historical significance of gardening can not be understated. It gave life to the earliest parts of the human race. Today it's not wonder that people still feel as passionate about gardening as they did nearly 4,000 years ago.
